God Makes Room For Us

When I think of this theme of God making room for us, I can't help but think of Pastor Geoff Pickup's message on the 65th anniversary of New Life church. He spoke on Genesis 26v18 - 22 where Isaac was digging wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham. The wells had been stopped up after the death of Abraham. Isaac's servants dug up a couple of wells that sparked off arguments with the locals, but then -

"He moved from there and dug another well, and they did not quarrel over it. So he called its name Rehoboth, because he said, "For now the LORD has made room for us, and we shall be fruitful in the land."Genesis 26v22.

If you have not heard this message I highly recommend that you watch it on YouTube ( Sunday Morning Church Online – 26th April 2020). In his message Geoff described how the church moved from being 'a small church on a back street', to being a large church on the main street, impacting the community. We can thank God that He has made room for New Life Church to have a prominent and strategic position in the city of Derby. For what purpose? To be fruitful in the land.

What about us on a personal level? God has invested spiritual gifts in each one of us, as well as natural talents and abilities. We can pray that God will make room for us to use those gifts and abilities to a greater extent, and that we will be more and more fruitful in the land. We are to 'stir up the gift of God' which is in us (2 Timothy 1v6). We can thank God that we are part of a church where we are expected and encouraged to use our gifts in different areas of ministry.

God has made room for us in our Nation. We have freedom to gather together as church. We have freedom to teach our children about the faith. We have freedom to share the Gospel on the streets. We have opportunities to go into schools, care homes and prisons to share the Good News. We have freedom to use media to point people to Jesus. Let's pray for wisdom, courage and determination to make the most of all this room that God has made for us, so that we will be fruitful in the land.
